How it works

  1. Number the courts. Court 1 is the top (“king”) court.
  2. Round 1 is random, or seeded by skill if you use ratings.
  3. Play one game per round — rally to 11 or a 10–12 minute timer.
  4. Winning teams move up one court. On court 1, winners stay.
  5. Losing teams move down one court. On the bottom court, losers stay — or sit out if players are waiting.
Court 1 · topCourt 2Court 3 win lose
Teams climb toward court 1 with each win and slide down with each loss.

When to use it

Competitive groups

Players want a clear “who’s best tonight” answer, not just social games.

Mixed skill levels

After two or three rounds, players naturally sort onto courts with similar opponents.

Short sessions

There’s no fixed schedule to finish — stop whenever time runs out and crown court 1.

King of the Court questions

What happens on the top court?

Winners on court 1 stay on court 1. Losers on court 1 move down one court.

Do partners change?

In classic King of the Court, partners stay together and move as a team. If you want new partners every round, use Up & Down the River.

How many players do you need?

At least 8 players on 2 courts. It works best with 12 to 24 players on 3 to 6 courts.

What if there are extra players?

Waiting players join the bottom court and the losing team there sits out the next round.
